Harvard Professor Resigns After Misconduct Probe

A Harvard University psychology professor has resigned more than ten months after a faculty investigation found him "solely responsible" for eight instances of scientific misconduct.

Harvard spokesman Jeff Neal said Tuesday that Marc Hauser's resignation is effective Aug. 1.

Hauser says in a resignation letter dated July 7 that he has been offered "some exciting opportunities" in the private sector. He also says he has begun work focusing on the educational needs of at-risk teenagers.

Last August, Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Michael Smith said an investigation found some studies conducted by Hauser had problems involving data acquisition, data analysis, and data retention as well as the reporting of research methodologies and results.

Hauser didn't immediately respond to a call and an email request for comment.
