Revere Man Pleads Not Guilty To Reading Shooting

A Revere man charged with fatally shooting a former high school hockey star in what prosecutors say was a dispute over drugs has been ordered held without bail.

John Burke pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Monday in Woburn District Court to charges including first-degree murder in connection with the Aug. 15 death of 22-year-old Joseph Ronan.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone says Burke shot Ronan several times during a prearranged meeting in Ronan's Reading home to buy prescription painkillers.

The 25-year-old Burke was arrested on Sunday.

Burke's lawyer says there is no evidence that ties his client to the crime scene.

Family and friends of the victim say he was a former hockey captain at Reading High School who was scheduled to begin Marine training in just weeks.
