Indoor Market Near Haymarket Could Open Next Year

The public gets to weigh in Monday night on plans for a new indoor public market in downtown Boston. The market would open next to Haymarket, which has been a fixture for generations.

Massachusetts Undersecretary of Environmental Affairs Phil Griffiths says the new market meets several goals.

"It provides an outlet for Massachusetts farmers, [food producers, specialty food producers and fishermen] to sell their products, and it also provides a wonderful cultural amenity for downtown Boston," Griffiths said.

The city has made an effort to involve those who will use the market in the planning process.

"We talked with folks who would be producing goods for the market and heard from them what types of things they'd like to see, and their issues," Griffiths said.

Monday night, at the sixth and final meeting, the emphasis is on the needs of consumers.

Proponents hope to open the market next year.
