Boston, Officer, Settle Promotion Lawsuit

A Boston police lieutenant who said he was denied promotion as payback for supporting a political opponent of Mayor Thomas Menino has settled a lawsuit he filed against the city for $45,000.

The settlement also calls for Lt. Joseph Gillespie to be promoted to captain by no later than March 1 and for the city to pay his $10,000 in legal fees.

Gillespie tells The Boston Globe that he's happy to put the case behind him and looks forward to his new duties.

A spokeswoman for the mayor says the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing and settling was cheaper to than going to court.

Gillespie was a supporter of Menino opponent Michael Flaherty Jr. during the 2009 mayoral race and an outspoken critic of the mayor.
