Days before the Iowa caucuses, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney appears to be gaining steam. A new CNN/TIME Magazine poll shows 25 percent of likely caucus-goers would vote for Romney.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul comes in second with 22 percent, followed by former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum at 16 percent. Former U.S. Speaker Newt Gingrich is in fourth place with 14 percent.

WBUR political analysts Republican Todd Domke and Democrat Dan Payne joined Morning Edition Thursday to consider how solid the Romney lead is. We asked them about Romney's standing in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

Payne says a Romney victory in Iowa would put him well on his way to capturing the GOP presidential nomination.

This program aired on December 29, 2011.
