Mass. To Outline Possible Transit Fare Hikes

State transportation officials are set to begin a process that could lead to the first MBTA fare hikes in five years, and possible service cuts as well.

The Finance Committee of the T's Board of Directors is scheduled to be briefed Tuesday on proposed scenarios for fare hikes and service cuts aimed at closing the transit agency's projected $161 million deficit.

State Transportation Secretary Richard Davey has promised up to 20 public hearings over the next couple of months before any final decisions are made.

The T Riders Union, a coalition of groups representing passengers, has urged the T to consider alternatives to raising fares or eliminating routes.

Current fares for passengers with CharlieCards are $1.70 for subways and $1.25 for buses.
