Winter Storm Hits Greater Boston

The first precipitation of a two-day snowstorm hit Boston on Wednesday afternoon.

"There's gonna be a major league lull in the precipitation [Wednesday night], people are gonna say, 'Gee, where's the beef to this?', but later on the snow should reemerge," said meteorologist Mark Rosenthal.

"Even if we do mix with a change to rain or sleet late [Wednesday night], it will go back to mostly snow [Thursday] morning," Rosenthal said.

The National Weather Service's winter weather advisory is slated to be in effect through 6 p.m. Thursday.

Rosenthal forecasts about 6 inches of snow accumulation in Boston by the end of Thursday, with 6-12 inches possible west and north of the city. Only a few inches are expected on Cape Cod and the South Shore.

Massachusetts Highway Administrator Frank DiPaola says crews are in place around the state.

"It is going to be a long event," DiPaola said, "but I think all winter long they've been somewhat, you know, anxious to get out on the roads and do some snow and ice operations, and this is good opportunity without there being the threat of a 20-inch blizzard."
