Roxbury Church To File For Bankruptcy

The Charles Street African Methodist Episcopal Church in Roxbury will narrowly avoid foreclosure after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late Tuesday night.

Ross Martin, of the law firm Ropes & Gray, says the bank was unwilling to negotiate a repayment plan.

"This is one where we say the bank's not willing to talk to us about a fair deal, so we're just going to get a fair deal," Martin said.

The dispute has drawn wide attention because it is between two prominent local black institutions.

OneUnited Bank had been planning to foreclose on Charles AME Thursday and could not be reached for comment.
