Acting Reputed New England Mob Boss Seeks Bail

The reputed acting boss of the New England Mafia is opposing a bid by prosecutors to have him locked up while awaiting trial in an extortion and racketeering case.

Lawyers for 53-year-old Anthony DiNunzio said in court papers filed Monday that there's "no likelihood" that the Massachusetts resident would flee while his case is pending.

DiNunzio's lawyers say he has stayed put since learning he was the target of an investigation a year ago. They also argue DiNunzio has "serious medical conditions," strong family ties to Massachusetts and that the allegations against him do not include "actual violence."

DiNunzio has pleaded not guilty to accusations that he participated in the shakedown of Providence strip clubs for protection payments. He is being held without bail pending a hearing on Thursday.
