Trial To Begin For Mass. Man In Wife's 1980 Death

A trial is set to begin for a 78-year-old Massachusetts man accused of hiring two men to kill his estranged wife more than three decades ago.

Edmond Carriere is charged in the 1980 death of his wife, Frances Carriere, in the couple's Cape Cod home.

Carriere was long suspected of paying $10,000 to have his wife killed, but was not arrested until 2010.

Steven Stewart of Brockton, one of the men allegedly hired by Carriere, was convicted in 2005. After the state's highest court overturned his conviction, he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

The other suspect died in 2004.

Carriere has maintained his innocence and said he was in Florida when his wife was stabbed to death in their Bourne home.

His trial is scheduled to begin Tuesday in Barnstable Superior Court.

This program aired on May 5, 2012. The audio for this program is not available.
