Feds Make Illegal Immigration Sweep In Boston Area

Federal immigration officials say they have apprehended 39 illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes in a three-day sweep in the Boston area.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says many of the 37 men and two women arrested this week had prior convictions for serious or violent crimes including assault and battery; assault and battery on a police officer; sexual assault; possessing and selling drugs; and drunken driving.

The arrests took place in Boston, Chelsea, Boston, Everett, Lynn, New Bedford, Revere, Somerville and Woburn.

Those arrested came from 15 different countries.

Thirty-six are being held in ICE custody pending deportation proceedings, two are presently in state custody with an immigration detainer hold, and one was released under supervision.
