Many Mass. Students Not Prepared For Higher Ed, Report Finds

Massachusetts is known for education — not only for some of the world's best private universities, but for the rigorous standards for high school graduates.

But a new report from the state Department of Higher Education says many students in the public higher education system are not prepared for college-level work.

The report looked at how the Massachusetts public higher education system compares with other states, and what needs to be done to make the state's system a national leader.

Higher Education Commissioner Richard Freeland says the system is increasingly important now because the state economy is more knowledge-based than ever before, and college degrees will be requred for jobs.

Freeland joined WBUR host Deborah Becker to discuss the report's findings.
