Bystanders Rescue Woman Who Fell On MBTA Tracks

Police say a group of subway commuters jumped onto the tracks in Cambridge to rescue a Minnesota woman who had fallen and appeared to be unconscious.

A MBTA spokesman said the 54-year-old woman, Tamara Woodard of Moorhead, was taken to the hospital for minor neck and back pain after the fall at the Kendall Square station Sunday.

An MBTA police officer said Woodard apparently stepped backward too far while talking with some friends and her husband, David Wayne, who was one of the roughly five people who jumped in to help her.

Officials and a witness said the rescuers then lifted the woman back on the platform, where she appeared to regain consciousness.

There was no train coming at the time.
