Mass. Travelers Adjusting To Economic Conditions

New England residents traveling through Boston for Thanksgiving say they're adjusting to traveling on tight budgets due to the slow economic recovery.

Landscape designer Anne Murphy of Gorham, Maine, was waiting for an Amtrak train at Boston's South Station on Wednesday as she headed for Thanksgiving dinner in Gibbsboro, N.J. She says she travels smarter by searching for deals online, using cheaper airports further away from home and packing fewer bags to avoid baggage fees.

Angela Peters of Somerville says she takes a bus to see her daughter in Philadelphia. She says a $95 roundtrip bus ticket is cheaper than the $120 she'd spend on gas to drive there, plus the extra costs for tolls and parking.

AAA says 946,000 people will travel more than 50 miles in Massachusetts between Wednesday and Sunday.
