Mass. National Guard Troops Home For Thanksgiving

Members of the Massachusetts National Guard are being welcomed home by their families this Thanksgiving.

Eighty-four soldiers from the 182nd Engineer Company arrived home Thursday morning after a year-long deployment in Afghanistan.

Maj. Gen. Scott Rice, the Guard's adjutant general, said the troops deployed on the day after Thanksgiving last year.

"You start off the day at the beginning of it all, a year ago, with a lot of apprehension, the unknown what's going to happen," Rice said. "Now you can come home with a tremendous amount of pride."

The soldiers spent the last year clearing explosives from more than 21,000 miles of road and return well-decorated.

"We have almost 75 percent of the unit receive combat action badges which is unheard of in a unit like this," Rice said.
