The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to take effect from noon Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

Snow is expected to mix with rain at times along the eastern Massachusetts coastline, including the city of Boston. Therefore, forecasters expect the highest snow amounts in the MetroWest area, including the Route 128 and Interstate 495 corridors.

Four to 8 inches of snow could accumulate across parts of eastern Massachusetts.

The snow is likely to begin early Saturday afternoon. The heaviest snow will occur from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. It will taper off toward sunrise Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Taunton is warning the snow may make driving difficult.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said Friday the city will be ready for First Night festivities even though Boston could get a significant amount of snow this weekend.

The mayor has ordered public works crews to pre-treat roads and prepare snow removal equipment.

Menino said he is confident roads and walkways will be clear in time for Monday's celebration.

This program aired on December 29, 2012.
