Longtime Boston Traffic Reporter Morgan Dead At 67

Longtime Boston traffic reporter Joe Morgan has died at the age of 67 after a long illness.

His family told CBS Boston that Morgan died peacefully while surrounded by loved ones. He's survived by his wife of 44 years, Ellen, and four grandchildren.

Morgan worked in radio for more than 30 years before he began traffic reports from the WBZ NewsRadio traffic helicopter in 1997, broadcasting the latest from the area's famously clogged roads.

Before that assignment, Morgan won numerous awards for his news and public affairs programming and editorial research and writing.

Former colleague Ed Walsh recalled Morgan's authoritative baritone, and said Morgan loved what he did.

Morgan retired two years ago. In an interview afterward, Morgan said he missed being up in the helicopter because now he was stuck in traffic like everyone else.

This program aired on January 31, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
