Jurors Start Deliberating Wayland Slaying Case

Lawyers in the trial of a Wayland man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend just weeks after they graduated from high school have completed closing statements and the case is in the hands of the jury.

Middlesex Superior Court jurors are scheduled to begin deliberations Wednesday in Nathanial Fujita's murder trial.

The 20-year-old Fujita is charged with strangling and stabbing Lauren Astley in July 2011. They were both 18 at the time.

Defense attorney William Sullivan said in closings Tuesday that his client had a psychotic episode at the time of the killing and wasn't responsible for his actions.

The prosecutor said Fujita killed Astley "with deliberate premeditation," and the slaying was carefully planned. Lisa McGovern said there is no such thing as a "psychosis fairy."

This program aired on March 6, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
