Ethics Panel Investigating Mass. Lawmaker

The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into what have been termed "serious allegations" against a state legislator.

A spokesman for House Speaker Robert DeLeo said in a statement that the allegations against the unnamed member were made by a House employee and brought to the speaker's attention about two weeks ago.

After a preliminary review by House counsel found sufficient cause to warrant a full probe, DeLeo ordered the ethics committee to begin a full probe.

The nature of the allegations was not disclosed. The spokesman, Seth Gitell, said DeLeo would have no further comment.

House Republican Leader Bradley Jones, of North Reading, called on the ethics committee to investigate the allegations "fully, fairly and expeditiously."
