CBC To Brew Beer In Honor Of Sean Collier

A local microbrewery is brewing a beer in honor of MIT police officer Sean Collier, who was allegedly murdered by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

Cambridge Brewing Company, located in Kendall Square near the heart of MIT's campus, will begin brewing Collier Stout, a dry Irish stout, next week.

"This seemed something that was personal, specific to Kendall Square in many ways, and a cause we could get behind," said CBC owner Phil Bannatyne. "You want to help when this stuff happens and we just needed an avenue for that, and this was right up our alley."

Bannatyne says he was approached about the idea by MIT police officer Cheryl Vossmer, whose brother, a brewer in Colorado, first thought it up. Vossmer served with Collier and, according to The Boston Globe, sought the approval of MIT police Sgt. Richard Sullivan and the Collier family before moving forward.

“The memorial service at MIT was the dream send-off that he would have wanted. Now having a beer named after him, it’s so fitting,” Tim Croke, Collier's former roommate told The Boston Globe. “I can’t wait for this to come out so Travis [Collier's other roommate] and I can raise a toast to him — one last cheer.”

CBC anticipates pints of Collier Stout will go on sale during the third week of June. It will sell for $5.50 with $1 from each sale going to the Jimmy Fund, which created a memorial fund in honor of Collier.
