Boston University and Berklee College of Music are among the institutions joining the expanding program, edX announced Tuesday. BU and Berklee are among 15 worldwide schools just added to edX, bringing edX's total number of participating institutions to 27.

The new edX schools include six in Asia, one in Australia, three in Europe and three others in the United States — Cornell University, Davidson College and the University of Washington.

Based in Cambridge, edX offers free online courses and, according to a release, "is building an open source educational platform ... while conducting research on how students learn."
