Environmental Group To Spend In Mass. Election

A group of environmental activists led by California billionaire Thomas Steyer that spent nearly $900,000 during the U.S. Senate primary plans to return to the state to work against Republican nominee Gabriel Gomez.

Chris LeHane, a spokesman for the NextGen Committee, said in a memo to Steyer's Massachusetts supporters on Thursday that the group planned to be a "politically disruptive force" between now and the June 25 special election.

The group says the campaign could include paid online ads.

NextGen targeted U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the Democratic primary, focusing on Lynch's support of the proposed Keystone oil pipeline from Canada. Lynch was defeated by U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, who opposes the pipeline.

Gomez supports the pipeline, saying it will create jobs and lower energy costs.

This program aired on May 23, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
