Pilot Killed As Plane Crashes On Remote Mass. Island

State police say a pilot has died after his small plane that crashed into a tree on Cuttyhunk Island off the coast of Massachusetts.

Police said 70-year-old Allen P. Spaulding Jr. of Wilmington, Del., was the only person aboard.

The Federal Aviation Administration and state police said the single-engine Maule M-4 aircraft crashed into a tree at about 10 a.m.

Dukes County Sheriff Michael McCormack said the plane apparently had a problem after taking off from a small dirt landing strip and went down in a wooded area nearby.

New England Cable News showed video of firefighters spraying the plane with water, but there was no fire or smoke.

The sparsely populated island, less than one square mile in area, is part of the town of Gosnold, and is about 12 miles south of New Bedford.
