Boston Schools Discipline 14 Workers

The Boston Public Schools have taken disciplinary action against 14 department employees who have faced or been convicted of criminal charges.

A report presented Wednesday night to the school committee says the workers have either been fired or placed on administrative leave.

The workers were all described as "support staff." None was identified by name.

The school system is currently reviewing records of all 9,000 department employees. So far about 6,000 checks have been completed.

The employees who have been disciplined have been convicted for assault and battery, drug offenses, and been charged with armed robbery, rape and forgery.

The school committee is slated to vote on a new hiring policy, which would take into account arrests and convictions, at meeting June 19.

This program aired on June 6, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
