Mass. Awards $3.7M In Green Communities Grants

Massachusetts energy officials have awarded $3.7 million in grants to fund scores of clean energy projects in 20 cities and towns.

The Department of Energy Resources' grants go to designated "Green Communities" that pledge to reduce their municipal energy consumption by 20 percent.

Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan says a "clean energy revolution" in Massachusetts is happening largely because of good local decisions. He says the grants will help continue that work.

The grants are funded through proceeds from Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative auctions, during which electricity generators pay for carbon dioxide allowances. Those costs are passed on to ratepayers.

Projects funded by the grants include $200,000 toward a streetlight upgrade in Bedford and a $250,000 streetlight replacement in Newton.
