Date Set For Markey's Swearing-In As Senator

U.S. Rep. Edward Markey is one week away from officially becoming the state's next U.S. Senator.

A spokeswoman for Markey says a swearing-in ceremony has been scheduled for next Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

There is one remaining formality and that is certification by the Governor's Council of the results of the June 25 special election in which Markey defeated Republican Gabriel Gomez. The council is expected to do that during a meeting on Wednesday.

Markey would also formally resign the U.S. House seat he has held since 1976, clearing the way for state officials to schedule a special election to fill that seat.

Interim U.S. Sen. William "Mo" Cowan has been filling the seat on a temporary basis since John Kerry resigned earlier in the year to become U.S. Secretary of State.

This program aired on July 9, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
