R.I. Gov. Chafee Won't Run For 2nd Term

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee says he will not run for a second term.

The governor, who recently joined the Democratic Party, said Wednesday he would not run next year because he wants to devote his time to governing. He has struggled with poor approval ratings and is a reluctant fundraiser.

Chafee is a former Republican U.S. senator who lost his seat in 2006. He became an independent in 2007, and won a four-way race for governor in 2010.

He became a Democrat in May, setting up what would have been a divisive primary against expected candidates state Treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.

Chafee had just $377,000 in his campaign account as of June 30, according to a filing with the Rhode Island Board of Elections.

This program aired on September 4, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
