Mass. Lawmakers Weigh Constitutional Amendments

House and Senate lawmakers could take up several proposed amendments to the state constitution, including one that would allow for early voting in Massachusetts.

A constitutional convention is scheduled for Wednesday at the State House. It is not unusual, however, for the joint session to convene but then quickly recess until a later date.

If the convention does take place, lawmakers could debate a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow Massachusetts to join more than 30 other states that currently allow some form of early voting in elections.

Another proposed amendment would allow future governors to name an interim lieutenant governor if the number two office becomes vacant - as is the case right now.

A constitutional amendment requires approval by two successive Legislatures and by voters.
