Gov. Patrick Meets With Boston Mayor-Elect Walsh

Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor-elect Martin Walsh met on Monday for the first time since Walsh's victory in the Nov. 5 election and promised to continue a strong partnership between the State House and City Hall.

"He obviously succeeds an extraordinarily successful mayor and someone who has been an important partner of mine in this job," said Patrick, referring to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who's retiring after more than two decades in office. "I'm looking forward to having that replicated and built upon as Marty takes the reins at City Hall."

Patrick, a Democrat, and Walsh, a Democratic state representative from Dorchester, noted after the closed-door meeting in the governor's office that they already enjoyed a strong friendship and their political relationship already reached back to 2006, when Walsh helped Patrick in his first campaign for governor.

While Patrick did not make an endorsement in the Boston mayor's race, Walsh said the governor did offer some advice during the campaign.

"Just keep your head down and keep moving forward and don't read the papers," Walsh said Patrick told him.

The two said they steered mostly clear of policy issues during the 20-minute meeting, though they said they discussed economic development and ways to bring more businesses into the city.

Walsh, who takes office in early January, noted that he and Patrick came from humble backgrounds and that 30 years ago their families would never have imagined them in their current positions.
