Recount Of Lawrence Mayoral Votes In Progress

Election workers are manually recounting votes cast in the Lawrence mayoral race, with the candidates challenging only a handful of ballots several hours into the poll verification.

Unofficial results from Nov. 5 shows Mayor William Lantigua lost to City Councilor Daniel Rivera by 58 votes, with 15,210 ballots cast.

The Eagle-Tribune reports that the recount began at 11 a.m. Saturday in the gym at the South Lawrence East School.

Volunteers, attorneys and observers sent by Secretary of State William Galvin were on hand for the exercise. Just four of the votes recounted about two hours later were challenged by the candidates.

Lantigua and Rivera did not respond to Associated Press telephone and email messages seeking comment Saturday.

This program aired on November 23, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
