Cambridge Woman Among 32 U.S. Rhodes Scholars

This year's Rhodes Scholars from the United States include a Massachusetts woman studying biology at Harvard University.

Elizabeth Byrne of Cambridge is among the 32 American 2014 Rhodes Scholars announced Sunday by the Rhodes Trust. The scholarships provide all expenses for two to three years of study at Oxford University in England.

The 22-year-old Byrne is a Harvard senior majoring in human developmental and regenerative biology. She plans to study applied statistics at Oxford.

Byrne has done research and clinical work at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital and an AIDS research center in South Africa.

Byrne moved to Cambridge after attending St. Thomas's Day School for preschool through sixth grade in New Haven, Conn.

This year's Rhodes Scholars were selected from 857 applicants endorsed by 327 colleges and universities.
