Lawrence Mayor Won't Concede Defeat After Recount

A recount of votes cast in the Lawrence mayoral race shows City Councilor Daniel Rivera has defeated incumbent William Lantigua by a wider margin than indicated in preliminary results.

Lantigua's lawyer told the Eagle-Tribune Saturday that he won't concede the election and says he expects to decide Monday how to challenge the recount.

Official results announced Saturday show Lantigua lost to Rivera by 81 votes, not 58 as indicated in the unofficial results of the Nov. 5 elections.

Rivera immediately pledged to work for all in Lawrence and asked those who support Lantigua to work with him.

Volunteers recounted thousands of votes by hand at the South Lawrence East School. Attorneys for both sides and observers sent by Secretary of State William Galvin monitored the exercise.

This program aired on November 24, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
