Mass. Trooper Involved In Revere Crash Suspended

A state trooper charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after allegedly striking an on-duty trooper's cruiser during a traffic stop has been suspended without pay.

Trooper Shawn D'Amato was suspended Tuesday following a duty status hearing.

Police say the off-duty D'Amato rear-ended a stationary cruiser with its blue emergency lights on in the breakdown lane of Route 1 south in Revere early Monday morning. The impact pushed the cruiser into the vehicle that had been pulled over, injuring a 29-year-old Chelsea man.

All three men suffered minor injuries.

D'Amato, a 19-year veteran, was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty.

His lawyer says reports that D'Amato had smoked crack cocaine are untrue and he intends to fight for what has been a "stellar career."
