Menorah Lighting Planned For Plymouth Rock

A special celebration is being held at Plymouth Rock to mark the rare convergence of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving.

Chabad Jewish Centers of Massachusetts is scheduled to hold a menorah lighting to mark the start of Hanukkah on Wednesday night at Plymouth Rock, the spot that marks the Pilgrims' arrival in the New World.

For the first time since 1888, Thanksgiving and the first full day of Hanukkah fall on the same day. It won't happen again for tens of thousands of years.

Chabad says both traditions are about freedom from oppression.

The lighting ceremony will be followed by traditional singing and dancing and Hanukkah foods.

The celebration is free and open to the public.

This program aired on November 27, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
