Ex-UMass Student Sentenced On Drug, Gun Charges

A former University of Massachusetts student, authorities say, returned to his home in the Berskhires on weekends to sell marijuana has been sentenced to three years in jail.

Daniel Lowenstein of Sheffield was also sentenced Tuesday to two years of probation. The former UMass-Amherst student was convicted last week of drug and gun charges.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that he was arrested in Great Barrington in March after selling pot to an undercover officer. At his arrest, police found a sawed-off shotgun and shells in his car with the serial number defaced.

The 22-year-old Lowenstein apologized in court, saying he had made "idiotic" choices.

His lawyer said he wasn't violent and had no intention of using the shotgun, which had been given to him by a customer instead of cash.
