Forecast: Warm Temperatures And Rain On The Way

This article is more than 6 years old.

With temperatures in the teens, Thursday morning was much milder than the past couple of days, and without the wind, it’s not going to feel nearly as cold waiting for a bus or walking the dog today. As the sun rises higher throughout the morning and into the afternoon, temperatures will respond and reach the upper 20 to lower 30s.

The positive trend in temperatures continues through the weekend, as all areas go above freezing Friday and into the 40s and 50s for Saturday.

But those warm temperatures don’t come without a price. On Friday, as the back edge of the arctic air departs and milder air moves in, a period of snow showers will occur. These snow showers won’t amount to much but could slow down the morning commute. Any snow showers end Friday afternoon and could even finish up as rain.

More rain will move in Saturday afternoon and night, and that batch of precipitation will not be light. As a strong jet stream pulls up moisture from the south, rainfall will become heavy at times Saturday evening and some street flooding could be an issue. The snow pack, where it exists, won’t absorb all the water, so minor water issues could result.

The rain will also impact the Patriots game and tailgaters. If you are headed to Foxborough you will want to wear your most waterproof gear. Temperatures won’t be cold during this rain storm reaching the lower 50s in the afternoon.

They system quickly exits Sunday morning leaving us with a partly sunny and mild day for mid-January. Right now, I don’t see any bitter cold air for the next week, which is welcome news for those of you seeing another oil delivery or getting another heating bill.

Thursday: Sunny and not as cold. Highs 25 to 30 and 31 to 34 on the Cape and Islands.

Thursday night: Increasing clouds, lows in the teens to mid 20s.

Friday: A few morning snow showers, otherwise lots of clouds and milder after noon. Highs 34 to 42.

Friday night: Mostly cloudy, lows in the mid 20s to lower 30s.

Saturday: Becoming cloudy, a few showers possible during the afternoon. Mild highs, 47 to 53.

Saturday night: Showers likely, could be some downpours. Lows in the 40s.

Sunday: Becoming party sunny and still mild. Highs 45 to 59.
