Boston Reports Its 1st Flu-Related Death Of Season

A Boston man in his 60s is the first person in the city to die from the flu this season, according to the Boston Public Health Commission, which added that the man had underlying health conditions.

The man was not named.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased for their loss,” Dr. Barbara Ferrer, executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission, said in a statement. “We often forget how serious of an illness the flu can be, especially for vulnerable populations, and it’s important that we keep encouraging people to get vaccinated as flu season can stretch into March or April.”

Since October, 47 people have been hospitalized in Boston for the flu, among 158 reported cases across the city during that time, according to the health commission.

Statewide, reports of the flu are down sharply compared to the same time last year.

The Boston Public Health Commission recommends everyone 6 months of age and older contact their primary care physician, community health center or local pharmacy to get vaccinated if they have not already.
