Suspect In New Bedford Police Shooting Held

A New Bedford man charged with shooting a police officer executing a no-knock search warrant has been ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.

Prosecutors said in court Monday that 20-year-old Nathan Manuel-Jackson fired four shots during a drug raid on Friday night from inside a second-floor apartment. One of the shots struck Detective Jonathan Lagoa, who survived.

The shooting occurred while police were executing a search warrant and were attempting to breach the door with a battering ram. Another man in the apartment is also facing charges.

The Standard-Times reports that Manuel-Jackson's dangerousness hearing is scheduled for Feb. 3.

The suspect told police he opened fire because he thought an intruder trying to break into his apartment. He faces charges including armed assault with intent to murder.
