Howard Dean Backs Grossman For Mass. Governor

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean has endorsed Treasurer Steve Grossman in his campaign for Massachusetts governor, calling the candidate a "bold progressive leader."

Grossman, in his second campaign for governor, is considered in the top tier with rival Attorney General Martha Coakley.

Newton pediatrician Don Berwick, former federal Homeland Security official Juliette Kayyem and former Wellesley Selectman Joseph Avellone also are seeking the nomination.

Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, says Grossman is fighting income inequality. And he cited what he calls Grossman's commitment to civil rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families and helping young people participate in politics.

Former gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker and Shrewsbury business owner Mark Fisher are seeking the Republican nomination.

Two independents candidates, Jeffrey McCormick and Evan Falchuk, are also in the race.
