State More Involved In Westfield State University President Search

State education officials are exerting more oversight in the search for a Westfield State University president than when Evan S. Dobelle was hired in 2007.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that new guidelines for the search and selection of state university and community college presidents went into effect last year. The guidelines now give state Department of Higher Education commissioner and board more authority when presidents are selected.

The new guidelines were in the works before last year's controversy over Dobelle's travel and spending. He resigned in November and has sued the university claiming trustees forced him out.

The Board of Higher Education approved the new measures in June 2013 in response to state lawmakers seeking direct involvement by the Department of Higher Education in presidential searches, performance reviews and compensation.
