St. Pat's Amherst 'Blarney Blowout' Cost Estimated At Over $200,000

The cost to a pre-St. Patrick's Day celebration that spun out of control at the University of Massachusetts' flagship campus in Amherst will likely total more than $200,000 for public safety, consultant fees and property damage.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that other costs for hospital emergency care and public officials' time, resources and supplies and private property damage related to the March 8-9 "Blarney Blowout" could push the amount far higher.

Police arrested 65 people and 141 were charged. Among those arrested were approximately 20 UMass students. Police say most of the others were students from colleges and universities from around New England and Mid-Atlantic region.

A review by former Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis will cost up to $160,000.

Overtime and pepper spray cost taxpayers $23,000.
