Lawrence Teachers Union Approves Contract

Teachers in Lawrence have their first union contract in more than three and a half years, voting on and ratifying a deal that had been reached tentatively in March.

By a margin of 57-to-43 percent, the union approved a three-year contract on Wednesday that increases salaries for starting teachers by $4,000 annually and creates a new process for filing grievances.

A few weeks ago, WBUR reported that the Lawrence school district, which is under state control because of its historically poor performance, and the teacher’s union had reached a tentative agreement on a contract with the state receiver in charge of the district, despite several disagreements between the two parties.
