Nurses To Run Marathon In Honor Of Patients They Treated

With two weeks to go, tens of thousands of runners across the city, country and world are getting ready for the 2014 Boston Marathon.

For a group of six local nurses, it will be a particularly important day. They all treated patients in the Intensive Care Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital last April.

This year, they will be running the marathon in honor of the victims they treated.

One of the nurses in the group, Meredith Salony, helped her fellow nurses train, as she is the only official qualifier in the group.

Last year, Salony was at home preparing for a night shift at the ICU when she heard about the bombs at the finish line.

"I was just so upset about everything of the day," Salony said, "and going in and having it be right in your face, it was unlike anything I've ever had to deal with."

This will be Salony's ninth marathon, she said.

"I just wanted to replace the bad memories with a celebration of what the marathon is really like," she said.
