Infant Under DCF Watch Dies

Massachusetts officials say a 2-month-old girl, who died after she stopped breathing in her family's motel room in Weymouth, was under the watch of the state Department of Children and Families.

The Boston Herald reports that Cayenne Isaaksen, spokeswoman for the Department of Children and Families, said the agency recently opened a case with the family. She declined to say when or why.

Weymouth police say the infant was taken to South Shore Hospital at about 8 a.m. Thursday after her father called 911, reporting that she was not breathing.

The Norfolk District Attorney's office says an autopsy did not find trauma or injury consistent with foul play.

DCF has drawn strong criticism after the disappearance of 5-year-old Jeremiah Oliver of Fitchburg. The child's body was found last month.
