Mass. Expands Mental Health, Substance Abuse Services

Massachusetts is awarding new grants to improve access to mental health and substance abuse services.

Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Tuesday that her office is awarding $8 million from money the state received in a drug marketing settlement. Coakley said easier access to assistance will help end the stigma around mental health issues.

A total of 22 organizations will be receiving funds over the next two years for direct care, public awareness, screenings and referrals.

There will be 18 clinicians placed in Boston Public Schools to help students with anxiety, trauma-related disorders and depression.

Danvers Public Schools will have a licensed psychologist on-site as well as mental health training sessions for staff and the community. Last fall a 15-year-old boy allegedly raped and killed his teacher behind the high school. He has pleaded not guilty.
