Debris From Chelmsford Overpass Hits Car

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — No serious injuries were reported after debris that fell from an overpass on Interstate 495 in Chelmsford struck the windshield of a passing car Tuesday afternoon.

Lisa Camara said she was driving behind her mother's car when she saw the piece of steel fall from the Route 3A bridge and hit her mother's car on the passenger side where Camara's daughter was seated.

The 12-year-old girl suffered minor cuts.

State transportation officials closed two lanes of the northbound lanes of the highway for emergency repairs after the incident.

Michael Verseckes, of the state's Department of Transportation, told WBUR the erosion was normal for an aging bridge.

"It is the case that like anything else, they do suffer wear and tear — exposure to the elements, which can lead to corrosion and deterioration."

Verseckes says the bridge was one of 5,100 in the state deemed structurally deficient and in need of repair.
