Hopkinton School Bus Driver Charged With OUI
An Ashland man charged with being drunk while operating a school bus full of Hopkinton High School cross country runners has been ordered held without bail.
Robert Murphy was held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Tuesday at his arraignment Monday in Framingham District Court.
A coach on the bus called police at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday to report that the driver appeared intoxicated. The bus was stopped just as it pulled into the high school parking lot.
Murphy was arrested after failing a series of field sobriety tests. He's charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, third offense, and operating a motor vehicle to endanger.
His lawyer said the 59-year-old Murphy has not been in trouble for 25 years and has "physical problems," without elaborating.
