Sentencing Set For Convicted Ex-Probation Head

A two-day sentencing hearing begins Wednesday for John O'Brien, the former state probation commissioner who was convicted of running a rigged hiring process.

In July, a jury convicted O'Brien and two former deputies, William Burke III and Elizabeth Tavares, of hiring politically connected job applicants in exchange for political favors.

Prosecutors are seeking nearly six years in prison for O'Brien. His lawyers want probation.

The case's judge is expected to hand down sentences Thursday.

Family, friends and former colleagues of O'Brien are reportedly asking the judge for leniency.
