Solicitors Keeping Chunk Of Money Donated To Charities

Professional solicitors hired by Massachusetts charities to raise money kept on average more than half the donations collected during charitable campaigns in 2013.

An annual report released by Attorney General Martha Coakley found that just 47 cents of every dollar raised by professional fundraisers hired by charities ended up going back to those charities.

In 2013, professional solicitors collected more than $388 million - $122 million more than in 2012.

Of the $388 million collected in 2013, just $184 million ended up with the charities.

That's an improvement from 2012, when just 34 cents of every dollar that a professional solicitor raised went back to the charity.

Massachusetts has no requirement that a minimum percentage or amount of funds donated through a professional solicitation campaign be passed on to the charity.
