Icy roads are blamed for numerous accidents in Massachusetts as a winter storm moved into the state.

The storm began as a mix of snow and freezing rain in much of the state before changing over to heavy rain.

State police responded to dozens of crashes and spinouts. Some involved the department's own cruisers.

Hospital emergency rooms also filled up with people hurt in falls on icy walkways. A spokesman for Baystate Medical Center told the Republican newspaper of Springfield the hospital had treated nearly 30 people for slip-and-fall injuries by mid-morning Tuesday.
